ENSEMBLES


The Ayala music program is comprised of 10 ensembles:
Marching Band and Color Guard, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Marching Indoor Percussion Ensemble, Concert Indoor Percussion Ensemble, and Winter Color Guard. This breadth of offerings provides opportunities for anyone interested in being a part of the musical world at Ruben S. Ayala High School.

Marching Band

Nationally known for its rigorous drills and innovative award-winning musical performances, the Ayala Band and Colorguard consists of students who perform music for its own sake, and build strength through competition as a team. The Ayala BAC is under the direction of Tim Trost with assistance by Shant Keuroghelian.

During the fall marching season, the marching band competes in local, regional, and national competitions. In select years, the band and color guard travel to Indianapolis to compete at the Bands of America Grand National Championships alongside over 100 bands from across the country. At Grand Nationals, the BAC has consistently made semi-finalists (top 30) and and has twice been a Grand National Finalist (top 12). In other years, the BAC travels to Fresno, California to compete in the Western Bands Association (WBA) Championships. They have been named Grand Champion of WBA three times.

Indoor Winter Percussion

Marching Drumline, also known as the Percussion ensemble, is considered one of the leading high school drumlines in the nation. Under the leadership of Ike Jackson, the marching drumline has achieved unparalleled success at the World Guard International (WGI) competitions, including:

A two-time gold medalist in both Marching and Concert in the same year – the only school to achieve this accolade

Thirty-one appearances in finals – concert & marching combined – more than any other school in WGI history


A medal in every scholastic class offered by WGI at World Championships (PSA, PSO, PSCO, PSW, PSCW – Ayala is the only school to achieve this feat)

Concert Percussion

The Concert Percussion Ensemble, sometimes referred to as “the Front Ensemble,” is a component of Marching Drumline and Marching Band. Made up of keyboard instruments, melodic percussion, electronics, and a variety of auxiliary instruments, the Concert Percussion is the reigning WGI Scholastic Concert World Champion for 2017.

Wind Ensemble

The Ayala High School Wind Ensemble is the premiere Wind Band for advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentalists. This ensemble is determined by an audition. The Ayala High School Wind Ensemble performs standard and contemporary band repertoire including transcriptions and college level pieces. Advanced technical concepts and skills are taught as required by the musical selections. The Wind Ensemble performs at local, state, and national music contests and festivals. This past school year, the Wind Ensemble received “Unanimous Superior” at every music contest and festival. The Wind Ensemble will be performing in New York’s prestigious Carnegie Hall in the Spring (March) of 2020. Recently, the Wind Ensemble won a special commission and will be having its “world premiere” on stage at Carnegie Hall. The Ayala High School Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Mr. Tim Trost.

Symphonic Band

The Ayala High School Symphonic Band is a performing wind band ensemble comprised of intermediate and advanced woodwind, brass, and percussion instrumentalists. Symphonic Band students focus on expanding ensemble skills, musical concepts, and technical skills. The Symphonic Band performs a wide variety of wind band repertoire. This ensemble performs at local and state music contests and festivals. The Ayala Symphonic Band is under the direction of Mr. Tim Trost.

Concert Band

The Concert Band is the third highest concert ensemble at Ayala High School. Consisting primarily of freshmen, Ayala’s Concert Band is the first ensemble most music students will participate in when they attend Ayala. A year-long program, the Concert Band performs several concerts throughout the year and attends SCSBOA Band Festival.

Chamber Orchestra

The Ayala High School Chamber Orchestra is an advanced ensemble determined by an audition. The repertoire ranges from Baroque to Contemporary. Students perform music at the highest standard and appears at local and state music contests and festivals. This past school year, the Ayala High Chamber Orchestra received “Unanimous Superior” at every contest and festivals. The Chamber Orchestra is under the direction of Mr. Tim Trost.

String Orchestra

The Ayala High School String Orchestra is open to all string players. The ensemble performs a wide range of string repertoire. Focus is on improving musical abilities and technical skills. The String Orchestra performs at local and state music contests and festivals. This past school year, the Ayala High School String Orchestra received “Unanimous Superior” at every contest and festivals. The String Orchestra is under the direction of Mr. Tim Trost.

Color Guard

The Ayala High School Color Guard is the reigning 2017 Scholastic World Champion of Winter Guard Association of Southern California, and is a frequent WGI Regional Medalist. The Color Guard is a component of the Marching Band during the fall, using choreography and equipment to enhance the visual effect of the marching band show, and is judged as part of the overall visual appeal as well as in its own category. From January through April, the Color Guard competes in Winter Guard, an indoor Color Guard activity. In select years, the Winter Guard travels to Dayton, OH, to compete in the WGI Color Guard World Championships. The Color Guard program is under the direction of Mario Ramirez.

Jazz Ensemble

The Ayala Jazz Ensemble is a year-long, audition-based class. Students rehearse and perform many styles of music; swing, Afro-Cuban, Latin, samba, rock, funk, and contemporary. The Jazz Ensemble attends a variety of local high school jazz festivals during the spring semester, including an annual tour to the prestigious Reno Jazz Festival, a four-day event at the end of April where over 300 performing groups from around the nation come to compete, and world renowned jazz musicians, clinicians, educators, and composers judge the event. The Jazz Ensemble is led by Shant Keuroghelian.

Jazz Band

The Ayala Jazz Band is a 2nd semester class that meets daily during “0” period. Auditions for Jazz Band take place in December. Students rehearse and perform many styles of music; swing, Afro-Cuban, Latin, samba, rock, funk, and contemporary. The Jazz Band attends a variety of local high school jazz festivals during the spring semester, including an annual tour to the prestigious Reno Jazz Festival, a four-day event at the end of April where over 300 performing groups from around the nation come to compete, and world renowned jazz musicians, clinicians, educators, and composers judge the event. The Jazz Band is led by Shant Keuroghelian.

Jazz Combos

The Ayala Jazz Combos are student rehearsed. Combos will learn a variety of tunes and will have opportunities to further develop their skills in improvisation. The Jazz Combos attend a variety of local high school jazz festivals during the spring semester, including an annual tour to the prestigious Reno Jazz Festival, a four-day event at the end of April where over 300 performing groups from around the nation come to compete, and world renowned jazz musicians, clinicians, educators, and composers judge the event. The Jazz Combos are led by Shant Keuroghelian.
